This children's picture book is designed to encourage the development of early language and literacy skills in all children, including those developing language normally and those with language delays. Written by an SLP with over 25 years of pediatric experience, this book uses evidence-based language learning techniques to facilitate production of first words, emergent literacy skills, and early learning in all children. A companion CD-ROM narrates two stories in both English and Spanish. Each of the two stories targets vocabulary words/animal sounds carefully selected from research on thousands of children learning language.
Each story is designed to help children learn 12 developmentally early vocabulary words/animal sounds in a natural context, a storybook. For many children, imitation animal sounds precedes production of single words. Targeted vocabulary words/animal sounds include:
> Story 1: cow, moo, duck, quack, dog, woof, cat, meow, boy, no, hi, & bye
> Story 2: horse, neigh, lion, roar, sheep, baa, bird, tweet, girl, no, hi, & bye
To encourage production of these target words, this book uses proven language-learning techniques including multiple repetitions of each word by the reader, multiple opportunities for children to produce each word, sign language, visual representations of target words (i.e., pictures and natural gestures), and postive reinforcement. The pictures on the CD for your PC expose children to rhyme and highlighted words in print. The CD also contains (a) suggestions for parents, teachers, and therapists on using both the book and CD and (b) printable black line images of the targeted words (animals, bird, boy & girl) for hands-on activities.
In addition to encouraging language development, the book also introduces the most essential early pre-reading skills such as phonemic awareness, which is the understanding that words are made up of individual sounds. Awareness of sounds is critical for later reading skills such as phonics or sounding out words. Finally, print awareness, or understanding that words we speak are related to the written words on the page, is nurtured through use of cartoon bubbles that call attention to this relationship. Simple words, repetition, and rhyme make the book an excellent first reader, too.
