Thematic Language Lessons for Early Childhood ECL31513  The delightful illustrations and enjoyable activities offer an excellent opportunity for language-delayed students to acquire new vocabulary and concepts. This is also the perfect way to "equalize experiences" for disadvantaged preschoolers and students from other cultures.

The lessons in this book promote the learning of basic vocabulary and concepts associated with a house and the major rooms in a house.

The lessons include:

> Full-page illustrations of rooms
> Assorted illustrations of objects
> Illustrated worksheets
> Activity instructions
> Homework/parent materials

Among the language skills covered are:
> Answering questions
> Categorization
> Color recognition and identification
> Following directions
> Inferences
> Negation
> Object attributes and functions
> Receptive and expressive vocabulary
> Spatial concepts

A pretest/posttest is included to assess individual progress. Adminstration of the test takes approximately 15 minutes and should be given to all students before the lessons are introduced.

The book is divided into 6 units: house, kitchen, living room, boy's bedroom, girl's bedroom, and bathroom. The activities in each unit may be presented numerous times over many sessions to ensure proficiency of learning. Periodic review of each unit's core vocabulary is also recommended. To reinforce the language concepts in the home setting, a homework assignment is included at the end of each unit. Also provided for each unit is a Language Lesson Summary. These Summaries may be used to facilitate lesson planning and may also be sent home to provide parents with a review of the remediation process.

Appropriate for use by language specialists, teachers, paraprofessionals, and parents, these lessons may be incorporated into the remediation programs of language-delayed children in either individual or small group settings.
