  Children's Publishing :: Autism :: S.O.S. - Social Skills in Our Schools AAPC101

  S.O.S. - Social Skills in Our Schools AAPC101 #236
S.O.S. - Social Skills in Our Schools AAPC101  This program is not for the teacher or parent who wishes to occasionally teach a social skills lesson. It was developed for schools that wish to make a serious commitment to helping children with high-functioning autism (HFA), Asperger Syndrome (AS), and other pervasive developmental disorders (PDDs) to successfully and enjoyably interact with others at school, at home, and in the community. The program is well conceptualalized and does things that no other curriculum has attempted. For example, the curriculum has built-in booster lessons, because the author recognizes that our children require more than one presentation of material and need reminders. It includes pull-out lessons for children with PDDs, recognizing that sometimes our children and youth need specialized instruction and practice to understand and begin to use a skill.

The S.O.S. program also addresses the all-important topic of generalization by including social skills lessons for all students in the general education classroom. While intended to foster understanding and friendships between students with and without PDD, these lessons also teach general education peers social skills - something almost all children need.

This comprehensive social skills program also incorporates:
(a) A strong peer mentoring program,
(b) A parent training component,
(c) "Homework" lessons that offer parents and children opportunities to explore social skills together in a meaningful and fun way, and
(d) Training for the S.O.S. supervisor - the individual who is carrying out the program.
