Listening for Literacy - Early Phonemic Awareness Activities for Young Children L103  Phonological awareness involves the auditory and oral manipulation of phonemes. Phonemes are the smallest unit of sound and are the basic building blocks for oral language and for the development of beginning literacy. The child's ability to segment, blend, and change phonemes within words is essential to future decoding skills.
