Linking Language - Simple Language & Literacy Activities Throughout the Curriculum GH17561
Linking Language - Simple Language & Literacy Activities Throughout the Curriculum GH17561 #345
Use circle time, snack time, dramatic play or any other time throughout the day to develop children's language skills. The authors in this book discuss both expressive language (talking), and receptive language (listening), as well as the beginnings of reading and writing. Each cross-curricular activity includes ways to enhance children's vocabulary, questions to help the teacher evaluate the children's progress, an annotated list of books that relate to the activity, and age-appropriate suggestions for writing experiences.
The chapters in the book are organized by areas that are common in most early childhood environments. The activities in each chapter are designed to initiate opportunities for children to explore and communicate in active, playful ways as they develop and acquire language skills. Each activity contains the following:
1. Short introduction - Describes the activity and suggests a learning objective.
2. What to do - Simple directions for the activity.
3. More - Suggestions for building on or extracting the initial activity.
4. What you will need - List of materials needed for the activity.
5. Words you can use - List of words that might be used while the children are engaged in this activity.
6. Questions - To help you assess the children's emerging language and literacy skills.
7. Literacy connections/reading experiences - An annotated list of books related to the activity and literacy ideas.
8. Literacy connections/writing experiences - Ways to encourage children to express themselves through drawing, writing, or dictating their thoughts.
You can use centers to support emerging language and literacy skills. The typical early childhood environment is arranged into areas or centers. These areas commonly include:
A. Art area
B. Writing area
C. Book/quiet area
D. Block/construction area
E. Water or sand area

A. Practice effective expression of needs, wishes, and ideas.
B. Increase their vocabulary in relevant experiences.
C. Use language to describe, compare, and relate experiences, thoughts, and feelings.
