Letter Links - Alphabet Learning With Children's Names HS106
Letter Links - Alphabet Learning With Children's Names HS106 #105
This book explains the importance of using letter-linked images in preschool along with printed letters. It takes children's natural interest in learning to write their own names as an entryway to teaching them letter recognition skills, letter-sound correspondence, and letter/word writing. The letter links learning system comes in two distinct parts: a "nametag" and "a letter-linked image" that starts with the same letter and sound as the child's name.
The book contains a wealth of information on the research behind the concept of letter links and provides detailed examples of every letter combination teachers will need for using children's names and letter-linked images to introduce the alphabetic principle. There are more than 26 sets of letter links in the book because many letters represent more than one sound. Between long and short vowels, vowels influnced by r, diphthongs (au, ei, eu), hard and soft consonants, digraphs, and blends, the authors came up with "64 initial letter sounds represented by 26 letters." The authors also give suggestions on how to deal with foreign names.
The book outlines "eight specific steps" to follow when using the letter links learning system, and it provides "more than 25 activities" for teachers to use in their classroom during the various parts of the day. Using the letter links system, teachers can introduce fun-filled activities related to the "alphabetic principle, phonological awareness, sense of word, and vocabulary."
