  Children's Publishing :: Storybooks :: I Can Do That CHP104

  I Can Do That CHP104 #191
I Can Do That CHP104  Whether your child is an infant practicing communication through gestures such as waving bye-bye or blowing a kiss, a toddler speaking his first words or combining two words together, a preschooler getting ready to read, an early reader, or a child with language delays working on these skills, "I Can Do That" is specifically designed to support a child's learning. Written by a professor of speech-language pathology with over 25 years of professional experience, each of the two "I Can Do That" stories encourages imitation of natural gestures or signs, first words, and word combinations carefully selected from child development research. To foster success, the book uses proven language-learning techniques including multiple repetitions of each word by the reader, multiple opportunities for children to practice language skills, and positive reinforcement.

And reading "I Can Do That" does even more! According to a National Commission on Reading report, shared book reading is the best activity to prepare children for literacy success. Research emphasizes the importance of exposing children to rhyme and highlighted words in print, both featured in this book. So, by reading it with children you love, parents and professionals are supporting both early language and literacy development.

Normally developing children and those with language delays learn nouns or names of things before any other part of speech. Use "I Can Do That" to help children build a verb vocabulary. Learning verbs is important for building sentences. For example, once a child has learned "fish" and "swim," he can put them together to comment about a fish swimming in a tank, "fish swim"! Both of the following two stories included in the book are designed to help children learn developmentally early gestures and matching vocabulary words in a natural context, a storybook:
>Story 1 ("People Can Do That") targets: eat, drink, kiss, hug, cry, sleep, and love.
>Story 2 ("Animals Can Do That") targets: swim, fly, hop, run, swing, sleep, and love.
Additional gestures include: yes, no, and shhh.

For even more learning fun, "I Can Do That" comes with an interactive CD-ROM version of the 2 stories in both English and Spanish and with printable pictures to make your own books!
