In addition to being a souce of encouragement, this book should be considered a helpful jump-start for teachers who have students with developmental disabilities. It will help them structure their classroom for these special students, providing an easy guide to setting up the classroom for success.
Each chapter in the book has a checklist to keep you on track and a list of materials on the CD. Following is a brief description of the table of contents:
Chapter 1: Purpose of the Book including a teacher checklist for every day of school.
Chapter 2: First Things First - Structuring the Classroom including physical and visual boundaries, a description of classroom structure tools on the CD, and a teacher checklist for the structured environment. Examples of classroom physical structure are independent work stations or student desk area, group teaching, 1-On-1 teaching area, choice center, visual instruction or listening center, and a reorganization area or safe place.
Chapter 3: Planning for Success - Lesson Plans and Other Organizational Tools for the Teacher including behavior documentation tools, a reinforcer checklist, ABCs of behavior, a list of planning tools on the CD, and a teacher checklist for planning and implementation of instruction.
Chapter 4: Visual Tools - Daily and Event Schedules including individual student schedules, mini-schedules, calendars, unscheduled events, visual prompts or teacher cues, visual tools on the CD, and a teacher checklist for schedules and other visual tools.
Chapter 5: Journals - Home and School Communication including a teacher checklist for communicating with parents.
Chapter 6: Resources - Books, Computer Software, and Internet Sites.
The CD has over 200 visual tools in PDF format, ready to print. These visual tools can be used to provide instructions and structure to help students become more successful in their academic environment.
