  Everyday Literacy GH18462 #498
Everyday Literacy GH18462  The activities in this book invite guiding adults to interact with children at their level along the literacy development continuum. The purpose of the interaction is to build the bridge between seeing the print as a whole in context, and viewing it in the form of its function, letters, symbols, words, and/or word meanings.

The book provides activity ideas using environmental print that can be used in the early childhood learning curriculum as well as a child's home and community. Most of the activities are generically designed so that they can be adapted to use print materials that directly relate to the community that surrounds the child.

Young children develop literacy through direct involvement in meaningful experiences with print. This book provides hands-on ideas for turning newspapers, signs, and signals in the community, and catalogs, and magazines into literacy experiences.

Key features of this book include:
A. Literacy goals to show how concepts of print, letters, and words can be integrated throughout the curriculum.
B. 250 activities to practice developing literacy skills, including writing, comprehension, rhyming words, print awareness, sight word recognition, vocabulary understanding, and letter sound recognition.
C. Literacy games, dramatic play materials, building equipment, and interactive bulletin boards.
D. Take-home activities and field trips to places in the community.
E. An appendix with reproducible forms and patterns that can be used in the activities, a checklist of environmental print ideas, and list of children's books that include references to environmental print.
