This book is intended to provide assistance to teachers, therapists, and ultimately the child in obtaining the necessary skills to accomplish the beginning steps to art. It is not solely intended for students with autism but for any student who would gain skills through the use of visual instructions. The hands-on activities are excellent for teaching sequencing to children with language delay as well as normally developing preschool children.
The 49 visually structured art activities presented in this book have proven to be a powerful and effective avenue for implemention of a therapy program. The activities provide opportunities to successfully engage children in tactile sensory experiences, improve fine motor planning, develop upper extremity control and hand skills, develop the ability to manipulate objects and tools, and develop visual-motor skills within a context that is appealing and purposeful for the young child.
Although tactile activities typically are offered in an effort to remediate tactile processing problems, children often are not amenable to engaging in those activities. Several tasks have been included that involve painting and printing of the hands or feet to create an image on paper that will become the basis of the art project, for example, "Spider." These tasks require tolerance for the textures of the paintbrush and paint on the skin as well as an adequate weight bearing or pressure to make the "print." Other activities, like "Ice Cream Cone" and "Snowman Fun," involve messy medians, such as a shaving cream and glue mixture, to spread within a designated boundary and the handling of uncommon objects and textures, such as feathers, cotton, gritty salt, and wax paper, necessary in other projects.
It is important for young children to attain competency with the use of tools such as scissors, paintbrushes, and crayons. Ability to effectively grasp and control movement of these tools provides a strong foundation for the development of their visual-motor skills. There is a wide range of embedded cutting and prewriting skills offered within the art activities contained in this book.
