Beyond Books Play Recipes NLW101 #322
Beyond Books Play Recipes NLW101  A "Play Recipe" for ages 2-5 provides the instructions and ingredients for creating a play activity that promotes academic growth. Most "Play Recipes" take 10 minutes and can be played with an individual child at home or with a group of children in the classroom.

Reading to a child is a great way to help promote their literacy skills. But exposing a child to books is not the only way way to prepare him/her for reading and writing. The 40 play activities in this set will help build a child's literacy skills and provide opportunites for everyone to have fun.

This is a great product for teachers, speech-language pathologists, and parents. Help the children and parents in your centers realize the importance of play for learning early literacy and language. Learning is facilitated by fun hands-on activites. Playful experience gives meaning and context to create learning.

The "Beyond Books Play Recipes" card deck is divided into five categories of play activities. Each category focuses on developing specific skills that help build literacy:
1. "Word Gathering" builds children's vocabulary
2. "The Music Of Words" helps children understand the sounds and rhythms of letters and words
3. "Words Can Tell Stories" helps children understand story structure and learn how to express their ideas
4. "The Wonder Of The Written Word" helps children understand that letters and words represent language
5. "Word Watching" helps children build visual skills

Each category is designed to help the caregiver understand the purpose of each activity. Many of the activities cover more than one area of literacy skills and all of them help a child "play" his/her way to reading.

These Play Recipes can also be used as appropriate homework that parents can do with their children; a nice alternative to work sheets. They are also a great resource for teachers on rainy days or as regular additions to their curriculum.
