Janet Derrick and Rose Medlock Speech Pathologists
Janet Derrick (left) and Rose Medlock (right) are public school speech pathologists in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Janet has her B.A. in Elementary Education and her Master's in Speech from the University of South Carolina. She worked in rehabilitation for six years before joining the public schools. Janet is a member of the American Speech and Hearing Association.
Rose has her B.S. in Speech from Purdue University and her MA Ed from the University of Dayton. She directed Camp Emmanuel, a summer camp for hearing impaired students for two years and has 26 years of experience in the public schools.
Janet and Rose first met when Janet came to help Rose out at her school. Their county had initiated the inclusion model for all language and learning disabled students. Rose and Janet developed their games during therapy as a result of a need for effective activities for the SLP to use in the inclusive classroom and in the therapy room. Janet and Rose wanted games that were portable, fun, interactive and versatile. They especially wanted games that could meet different goals and objectives within the same game and one that could be used over and over without losing interest or content. They founded JaRo (JAnet and ROse) Educational Systems, Inc. and their game Pick Your PointsŪ was born. Currently they have four versions, Language, Phonics, Pre-Literacy, and Articulation. Each game includes a manual, magnetic board, magnets and a gorgeous tote. The children love to play Pick Your PointsŪ! To their great delight, regular education and special education teachers have embraced their games to use in their own classrooms.
